PM Shehbaz Sharif Leads Pakistan at 80th UNGA; Ishaq Dar Joins High-Level Talks in New York

ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has departed for New York to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where global leaders have gathered for a week of high-level events. The Pakistani delegation also includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who arrived in New York on Monday.

PM Shehbaz Sharif’s Key Agenda at UNGA

The 80th UNGA High-Level Week 2025 is being held under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.” Addressing the session, PM Shehbaz is expected to call on the international community to resolve prolonged conflicts, especially the Kashmir dispute and the Palestinian question, ensuring the right to self-determination for affected people.

According to the Foreign Office, the Prime Minister will also share Pakistan’s perspective on critical global concerns, including climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, sustainable development, and regional security issues.

He will participate in several high-level events, including meetings of the UN Security Council, the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and a special high-level event on climate action. Furthermore, PM Shehbaz will attend the High-level International Conference on Palestine and the Two-State Solution, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

Ishaq Dar’s Arrival in New York

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar landed in New York on Monday to accompany the Prime Minister and represent Pakistan at ministerial and high-level meetings.

He was received by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, along with Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, Pakistan’s envoy to the United States, and other senior officials.

Besides accompanying PM Shehbaz, Ishaq Dar has a busy schedule of over a dozen bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries, where he will discuss cooperation, trade, and security matters.

A Historic UNGA Session

This year’s UNGA is significant as it also marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. Leaders from nearly 150 countries are gathering to share their vision for peace, development, human rights, and collective global action.

Special attention will be on the two-state solution for Palestine, as well as urgent action against climate change. The UNGA has also permitted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the event via video link, despite visa restrictions imposed by the United States.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Message

Pakistan’s delegation is expected to underscore its commitment to global peace, security, and development, while reaffirming the country’s resolve to collaborate with all UN members in accordance with the UN Charter.

PM Shehbaz will highlight Pakistan’s role as a member of the UN Security Council, emphasizing conflict prevention, peace-building, and promoting prosperity through cooperation.
